I’m Mike G, a skilled certified personal trainer and sports performance coach in San Diego, California. With over 12 years of experience, I have gained vast knowledge working with a wide-ranging variety of clientele. I am also a father to a very energetic 4-year-old daughter, a husband, and an entrepreneur. I was born and raised in the Bronx, New York and grew up participating in sports my whole life. From baseball, basketball, handball, and football I learned about the importance of teamsmanship but also developed a competitive nature. However, in the community where I grew up, not many were educated about the importance of health and nutrition. A major challenge I faced growing up was a fluctuation of losing and gaining weight. From my early to mid 20’s I became very overweight and developed high blood pressure. After I learned of the diagnoses from my doctor, I became stressed and experienced low self-esteem. I remember looking in the mirror and talking down on myself. From the outside looking in I presented myself to others as a happy & positive guy. But inside, I was the total opposite. This kind of negative self-talk would bring anyone down since as a society, we are typically our own worst critics. One day I realized if I were to continue down this path it would lead me to complete mental and physical self-destruction. This is the moment I decided to make a change and I joined a gym. I admit that at first it was a very intimidating place. I would look around at the people who were in such good shape an say to myself “damn I am never going to get there.” But a voice in my head told me “If you don’t do anything about changing your ways then nothing is going to happen and that’s guaranteed!”. Consequently, I changed my attitude, pushed through, and made working out a regular routine. After a few years I was in a better place mentally, physically, and emotionally. I decided to turn my passion into a career. I left the job I had, collected unemployment, and invested my money into the American Academy of Personal Training. This turned out to be one of the best investments that I made in my life. I spent the summer of 2010 learning the curriculum to be a qualified personal trainer. After graduating I immediately landed a job at one of the busiest Equinox Fitness Clubs in midtown Manhattan. Equinox is considered one of the best gyms not just in New York City but across the country with its uber luxury and unrivaled fitness culture. For me, it was like the Harvard of the health & fitness industry, and I learned significantly about the business while working there. They provided an on-boarding program called the Equinox Fitness Institute which tested your knowledge. For a newbie like me, it was challenging but helped me tremendously on how to be a successful personal trainer to the Equinox gold standard. During my time there, I worked my way up to from a Tier 1 to a Tier 3, which at the time was considered the highest level of personal trainer at Equinox. It was there that I discovered a deep passion for the art of boxing, and strength & conditioning. I developed my skillset and training to a much higher level of discipline. I also met so many talented trainers, amazing clients, and the future love of my life Benicia. From there I was scouted by New York Sports Club and spent some time there before relocating to San Diego. |
In 2016, I joined the team at Fit Athletic in Downtown. I had to start all over developing my client base but was very excited to bring my passion, skillset, and niche to a new atmosphere. While working there I created a successful boxing program that added a fresh new dynamic to their gym culture. I started off coaching one-on-one boxing sessions and soon after taught weekly small group classes. Management witnessed my success and invested in renovating a room and added additional equipment specifically for my boxing program. I thought life couldn’t get any better. Then BOOM…shit happens!
With many years of stress on my body from playing football, boxing, and working out hard without proper recovery, I developed severe osteoarthritis in my right hip. As a result, in June of 2016 at the age of 35, I underwent a hip replacement. Once again, I found myself mentally and physically broken. Everyday tasks that were once simple like getting out of bed, taking a shower, and using the bathroom felt impossible due to my limited ability from the surgery. With the help and support of my wife Nicia the healing process became easier to overcome. An essential component of my healing process was physical therapy. Initially, physical therapy was done at my home 2 times per week for the first month and I will never forget Anna as she was very integral in my recovery. The other days of the week I would continue therapy on my own by doing the exercises she prescribed for me and well as utilize my walker to walk around my building. I would give myself small goals to achieve such as getting back and forth down the hallway then getting the mail to walking around the block. The next phase was on land and in pool treatment at the physical therapy office. I vividly remember at my first physical therapy session onsite the doctor telling me that I would no longer be able to train in boxing. But by the end of the session the physical therapist was surprised at what I achieved. He apologized and told me I could do whatever my mind was determined to do. Another component of my healing was keeping my mind fresh and focused. To maximize my time while recovering I studied and attained two additional specialized certifications in fitness nutrition and sports conditioning. With the totality of this experience, I developed a new insight on my training mentality – the importance of MINDSET and RECOVERY! Eight weeks post-surgery I was back at Fit Athletic training my clients.
In 2017, I made the difficult and somewhat frightening decision to leave Fit Athletic and began training at Self Made Training Facility. This move allowed me to grow, and I adapted a fitness coaching mentality instead of traditional personal training. It also allowed me the opportunity to take all I have learned and experienced throughout the years of my career and my own personal transformations to create and manage my own fitness coaching business.

Hey I’m Nicia! Private chef and Certified Health and Nutrition Coach in San Diego. I have a BS in Business Marketing and an MBA. Most of my career has been in sales in the corporate world of the big pharma industry and corporate wellness. I am also a mom to a 4-year-old daughter who keeps me busy, a wife, and an entrepreneur. For 7 years I spent a lot of time in hundreds of physicians’ offices and hospitals promoting medications in multiple therapeutic areas. Always patient centric, I observed the patients around me and saw how unhealthy most were, often with multiple comorbidities. I know the importance of medicine to help people and to save lives but could some of its use be prevented, reduced, or discontinued with manageable, sustainable, and modified lifestyle changes? I believe there is an immense gap that needs to be filled between pharmacological medicine and lifestyle medicine and am very happy that awareness is increasing, and changes are being made. |
I grew up around both sides of my family cooking. Being of mixed heritage (African American and Chinese) I got to experience how food brought the family together from the lens of two different cultures. These childhood memories are ones that I will always cherish as they have helped inspire me and shape me to the woman I am today. It’s no surprise that I love to cook, and my family loves to eat good, tasty food. I am always in the kitchen crafting up healthy new recipes or experimenting with different ingredients making healthier versions of our favorite childhood and current dishes. As a wellness and fitness enthusiast I am conscious of what I put into my body and believe in balanced clean eating without being bland, boring, or super restrictive. I just celebrated my 44th birthday and let me tell you I have tried every diet, cleanse, fad, and plan you can imagine. What I always come back to is balance and an 80/20 mindset of eating. 80 percent of my nutrition are healthy choices and 20 percent of my nutrition allow for some flexibility for less healthy options with moderation. So, if I am out on a family outing and my daughter wants ice cream, I’m not so restrictive that I will not have a scoop of ice cream with my family but rather allow myself the grace to be a part of a great family experience. Now notice, I said a scoop! Additionally, it is important to me to lead by example and show my daughter healthy eating habits and that it is ok to have a treat every now and then. I am also an avid runner and have been running since I was 18, I’ll let you do the math! For me to be able to run the mileage, have the endurance and for my body to recover I need balanced nutrition with macros that work for me. I have mild anemia so if I am low on iron mainly from meat proteins, I’ll end up freezing cold with pale hands, I’ll feel fatigued, and my body will take longer to heal from long runs or strenuous workouts. I remember back in 2010 after adopting a vegan diet for over a year and averaging 50 miles of running per week, I would get a bad case of runner’s knee and back pain. After physical therapy, chiropractic care and acupuncture multiple times a week for months my acupuncturist asked how long I had been vegan and if I grew up eating meat. He suggested that if me being vegan wasn’t purely humanitarian that I should incorporate some meat protein back into my diet if I wanted to keep running the mileage I was. I took his suggestion along with continuing my therapy modalities and my injuries healed. I believe there is no one size fits all approach to healthy eating. Successful eating plans should be individualized and take the whole person into consideration depending on your goals or any underlying health conditions. Overall, an 80/20 balanced approach to healthy eating is a mindset and is backed by nutritional professionals because of its advantages to promote healthy habits, be sustainable, be adaptable, and to be easy.
Fast forward 13 years later and I am still running 25-30 miles per week, strength training, being a mom, wife, daughter, friend, chef, entrepreneur and pulled in so many different directions throughout the day. I’m busy AF! I need healthy meals that are rich in flavor with aromas that remind me of home, that can fuel me without tasting or looking like they were mass produced.
It is from all that you have learned about me above that in 2019 I made a pivotal moment in my trajectory. I left the comforts of corporate to embark on a journey into an industry that was completely new to me. An industry of meal prep that allowed me to blend my passion for cooking, nutrition, fitness, and business by helping others eat well with Dope Ass Meals now Dope Lifestyle Meals!
